Not effective ones. Manganese steel plates were fitted to vests for some gun crews, but they were heavy, bulky and hard to produce.

There were nylon "flak jackets" issued to some airmen and to other specialized soldiers, but they only stopped slow-moving shrapnel or spalling. The rifles of World War II were powerful enough to shoot through them. Ceramic and Kevlar vests were developed for helicopter crews in the Vietnam era (1970) but were not mass produced until the 1980's, when they began to be distributed to police officers.

Yes and no. There WAS a form of body armor- but it was very heavy, very hot, and could not be worn by a soldier on foot. They were mainly used for bomber crews- not to stop bullets, but fragments from anti-aircraft shells. Those shells were called "flak", and the armor called "flak jackets".

No, nor in WW2. They are a very recent invention, at least Kevlar is. Armour had been some protection to a musket ball (at long range) but modern ballistics penetrate most things.....
