I visited New Orleans on August 13, 2009 and did a tour of the city. Our tour guide told us that back in the day caskets used to be buried underground. However, since New Orleans is below sea level, the caskets would uproot from the ground and float down the streets during heavy rain / floods. They ending up in nearby parishes or many miles away, and with no labeling on the caskets it was difficult to find out where they belonged. As a result, the dead are now buried in above ground graves called mausoleums and appropriate labeling on the enclosure where the deceased is kept is required.
Numerous soldiers killed in battle were buried in the "Fields of Flanders" simply because it was on that ground that their deaths occurred. As is generally the case in most wars that have ever occurred, the decomposition of corpses, along with the disease that can be transmitted when corpses are left above-ground, demands that the deceased find their final resting place on or near the place of their death.

Doughboy has recently come out with an 52" above ground pool that can be buried 46" and carries a full warranty. If you bury the pool more than 46 inches, the warranty is void. I purchased one and planned to have it buried but when the pool installer started digging he ran into a problem with rock. Now we are stuck with either covering up the hole and not having a pool or having it above ground. Not exactly what I wanted but it will make the hot summer days more bearable.

The only two I can think of are mausoleum and sepulcher, as they, like a tomb, must be above ground. The true answer to the old joke: "Who is buried in Grant's tomb" is "No one. Grant wasn't buried, he was entombed".

It wasn't a holiday resort. She was buried in an above-ground mausoleum where bodies were laid out on slabs and left to rot. Not a pleasant or very romantic place to be.
