There were many places of entertainment in the ancient cities. In Rome, it was the Colosseum and before it was built, there were various other arenas. There was the Circus Maximus and the various theaters also basilica type halls where mime shows and poetry readings were held. Entertainment of some type was usually provided at formal dinners.
To see the gladiators in action. It's a bit like going to a stadium to watch a football match, though it was a lot more violent back then.
