The usual listing is that given in the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas". In the poem, Santa exhorts eight reindeer by name, the list being:Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer and Vixen! On Comet! On Cupid! On Donner and Blitzen! I don't know why Moore (the poem's author) chose those specific names, but choose them he did, and they've been traditional since. (Donner and Blitzen are Germanic names meaning respectively "Thunder" and "Lightning", if you've ever wondered.) The most popular addition to the canon came in 1939, when Robert May came up with a coloring book for Sears to give away entitled "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Since then, Rudolph is usually listed as the "ninth reindeer" (or first, since he supposedly occupies the lead position).
That'd be Swedish for Thunder and Lightning in translation. Can't see why an US Santa would use Swedish named for his reindeer.

Because the other reindeer's identities were already established. The commonly cited names of the reindeer are Dasher and Dancer, Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid, and Donder and Blitzen. They are based on those used in the 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas, arguably the basis of reindeer's popularity as Christmas symbols, where Donder and Blitzen were originally called Dunder and Blixem respectively.Robert L. May created Rudolph in 1939 as an assignment for Montgomery Ward. The retailer had been buying and giving away coloring books for Christmas every year and it was decided that creating their own book would save money. So Rudolph having a red nose was just a marketing ploy used by Montgomery Ward.
