There is a conspiracy theory that states that in the conclave to replace Pope Pius XII Giuseppe Cardinal Siri of Genoa was actually elected as pope. However, enemies of the Church from Communist countries threatened mass destruction and persecution of the Church should Siri accept the position as Pope Gregory XVII. Even though he had supposedly already accepted the position as pope, the College of Cardinals is reported to have forced his resignation illegally and elected Pope John XXIII who they thought would be more acceptable to the communists. Since the proceedings of conclaves are secret we will probably never know if this really transpired. However, there are a number of people who state that all popes elected since the death of Pius XII are not legitimate popes because of the irregularities that supposedly happened in 1958.
