One of the causes of the Hundred Year's War was the claim Edward III had to the French crown. Philip the Fair's nephew had been crowned king but Edward III of England claimed he had direct blood line, Philip the Fair's daughter being his mother. As a result, wanting to remove the English from Gascony, France attacked an English settlement. Another cause was the falling economy in both countries.

The Hundred Years War was started over a dispute between England and France over who ruled France. The French king at the time had died, and no male heir was still living. The English king at the time claimed that he was distantly related and should get the throne. A dispute started over whether or not England should really have France, and the war began as a way to settle the dispute.

Causes of the Hundred year war:

-French and English were fighting over the French throne.

-French and English saw military adventure as a way to avoid domestic problems.

NEW RESPONDENT

Another very real reason of the conflict was the vassal status of the English dominions in France, reaffirmed by the treaty of Paris of 1259. Indeed no king of France seemed to be happy noticing how large the portion of the French land occupied and ruled by an English monarch was and no king of England could happily accept to do feudal homage to another monarch whom he regarded as his equal. Furthermore, to worsen the matter, there were two type of feudal homage to do:

the simple homage with which, for example, the King of England but officially only as Duke of Aquitaine, acknowledged to be vassal of the King of France and paid homage for, or

the "full homage", with which the King of England paid homage, as vassal to the King of France and acknowledged the King of France to be the suzerain of the Duchy of Aquitaine .

The first one would had been generally accepted by the English King.

The second one would had been generally claimed by the French King, giving then the young Edward III enough ground to officially open the hostility, supported by other more or less justified reasons, like his major rights to the French throne.
