What's wrong if your car ac works for a few minutes then the compressor stops running and if you shut it off and then turn it back on it works for a few more minutes?

It sounds like an old car of mine. My old car had a short in the wiring and instead of replacing the wiring the previous owner installed a circuit breaker instead of a fuse. the problem was that the breakers amperage was small and cut out after a while. These circuit breakers are made to do this for safety reasons. If they get too hot they will shut down so no damage is done to the car. I recommend that you take the car to a shop and have the electrical system checked out.
The first answer is possible but unlikely---without a hands on check I would guess the refridgerant is low and the low pressure switch is shutting down the system then when the pressures equalize between the low and high sides the switch kicks back in so the compresser starts up again. This means the system needs topping up(the most common repair for an ac swstem.
