Some medals are also produced by private contractors under government contracts. The minting process involves strict quality controls to ensure that the medals meet the required standards for design and durability. Most military medals can be sold at a garage sale or back to a military surplus store with one major exception - the Medal of Honor. It cannot be sold, ever. Some online retailers have their own policies - please check with the company for what their requirements are. Purchasers of medals can only have them to look at - they cannot be worn, because they were not earned by the purchaser (unless he or she was replacing a medal that was lost or damaged).
