The Crystal Cave is about Merlin, the wizard who would train King Arthur some day. But this book is about Merlin's training. Merlin is captured by Vortigern who needs to sacrifice a boy with no father. Merlin's mother had separated from Merlin's father before his birth.
It depends on the legend you want the answer for...in the book "Mists of Avalon" and most legends Merlin's parents are Druids. In the book "I am Morgan Le Fay" Merlin's parents were normal people. In the show Merlin, Merlin's mom, Hunith, is a peasent woman and his dad, Balinor, is a dragon lord. Hope this answers your question.

I'm not exactly sure what book you are reading-- but Merlin could worn Arthur about Morguese, Morgan, Mordred, Lancelot, or Guenevere.
