While the exact cause of ADHD is not clear, research efforts continue. Factors that may be involved in the development of ADHD include genetics, the environment or problems with the central nervous system at key moments in development.

Additional research suggests that exposure to certain chemicals may increase a child’s risk of having ADHD.

ADHD is not caused by bad parenting, too much sugar, or too many Video Games. ADHD is a brain-based, biological disorder. Brain imaging studies and other research show many physiological differences in the brains of individuals with ADHD.

Risk factors:

  1. Blood relatives, such as a parent or sibling, with ADHD or another mental health disorder
  2. Exposure to environmental toxins — such as lead, found mainly in paint and pipes in older buildings
  3. Maternal drug use, alcohol use or smoking during pregnancy
  4. Premature birth

How does nicotine affect those with ADHD?

Individuals with ADHD suffer from bad impulses, poor concentration, and have a hard time remaining still. Nicotine is stimulant like most ADHD medications. In fact, research has proven that individuals with ADHD more likely to try smoking at a younger age and more likely to transition into a full-time smoker. Nicotine like amphetamine (Dexedrine, Adderall) or methylphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) causes a release of dopamine and reduces the breakdown of other neurotransmitters in the brain. This causes nicotine to be more rewarding to those with ADHD due to its calming effects.

What causes attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder?

The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors. Genetics plays a significant role, as ADHD tends to run in families. Neurological differences in brain structure and function, particularly in areas related to attention and impulse control, also contribute to the development of ADHD. Additionally, factors like premature birth, exposure to toxins during pregnancy, and early childhood stress may increase the risk of developing the disorder.

What will caffeine do to someone with ADHD?

Caffeine has not been approved to treat ADHD, nor has it been proven to have any dramatic effects on focus or attention. Caffeine is a very mild stimulant and it belongs to the same class of drugs (psychostimulants) that are commonly used to treat ADHD such as amphetamine or methylphenidate. There have been theories that many people with ADHD benefit more from caffeine and it may be an attempt to self-medicate (similar to the higher proportion of individuals with ADHD that smoke tobacco which contains nicotine); treating ADHD with caffeine is not recommended.

When ADHD and schizophrenia are combined?

In combination, ADHD is usually diagnosed at a young age and as they grow older, this causes them to develop schizophrenia. Having trouble focusing are symptoms of both ADHD ad schizophrenia therefore it leads on to the person becoming predominantly schizophrenic which is a much more serious mental illness. I know because this is what happened to me.
