First of all, 8 years is the perfect age to introduce your little artist to paint by numbers . That, however, doesn't mean that it's wrong to let them indulge in this art when they're younger.

I always did my kids rooms in a cheap, pastel latex, and then I didn't mind so much if they messed it up, crayoned on it, etc. It was later fun for them to paint it over with me.
Buy one of each. Proof sets will always have less total numbers. But, sometimes the uncirculated coins outperform them in the long run.
