• A user manual (often delivered with a product) is a straightforward guide for end-users on how to operate or use a system or equipment written in simple, easy-to-understand language so a lay user can follow instructions.
• A technical manual (or more precisely a technical manual in electronic / database-driven form like Interactive Electronic Technical Manual / IETM) is designed for maintenance or technical personnel, containing detailed, technical information, maintenance instructions, troubleshooting procedures and technical specifications not just basic operation.
The difference between a technical guide and a user guide is: a technical guide simply tells you the specifications of your computer. It shows you RAM, Graphics capabilities and Hard Drive space etc, etc. But a User Guide is a step-by-step way to learn how to use any object from a store.
User documentation is a method of communicating technical information to non-technical people to help them do something. (Rob McKilliam 1985)
