The central theme of "The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk" is the exploration of isolation and its impact on the human psyche. Through the story of Selkirk, who was marooned on an island and endured solitude, the poem delves into themes of loneliness, resilience, and the struggle to maintain sanity in isolation. Donne's poemThe Good Morrow is typically metaphysical in its startling beginning, its dramatic nature and progression of thought, its striking metaphysical conceits, its range of intellectual imagery from the worlds of theology, geography, chemistry and cosmology, its catalogic mode, the use of hyperbole, the mingling of gravity and levity, the colloquial language, the presentation of the lovers as microcosms, and finally the union of the physical and the psychological in love.
The officer delivers a handwritten note, from a colonel on the front line, to a mother of a soldier telling her he has been killed. the title and first stanza give the impression that he died a heroic death but then the second and third stanzas reveal through the officer's thoughts that in fact he panicked and was killed as he tried either to run away/get himself injured in order to be sent home. however in WWI the families of men who deserted were not told the truth about how they died, as it was thought to be kinder to let them think that they had died heroes. in this poem sassoon is criticising the officer, who represents high-ranking officials in the army, who has a callous disregard for the boy's death, and creating sympathy for both jack and the mother, who represent the ordinary soldiers of the war and their families.
In an experiment, the independent variable is the variable that can be altered or controlled to produce a change. The result being studied is the dependent variable, which is observed to change as the independent variable is changed.Example : In an experiment testing the effect of caffeine on reaction times, the amount of caffeine consumed is the independent variable and can be varied. The reaction times are the dependent variable, and a correlation (change in times) with the independent (amount given) is the information being sought. There are three kinds of variables. These are:Independent variable: is not affected by any effects in the experimentDependent variable: its reaction does depend on other variablesControlled variable: variable that you can control throughout the entire experimentTo put it simply, the independent variable tries to manipulate the dependent variable in an experiment. The independent variable (manipulated variable) is a variable that is changed by the experimenter. The dependent variable (responding variable) is what you are trying to determine in an experiment. My 6th grade science teacher taught us a poemThe manipulated is what you control the responding variable is your ultimate goal.
