Jonathan Frisby played the essential "helping hero." In the book, he assists in the rats escape by getting through the vent with them and squeezing through a space under a hatch of a sort to unlatch it from the outside so the rats could be free. In the end, he played the most important part in their escape, because the rats would have never been able to unlatch the metal cover on the vent to the outside without him. (Sorry that this answer is so long, but I wasn't sure just how to explain it. I used to love this book as a kid; so if you're reading it for class, enjoy it! It's actually really interesting once you get down to it :3)
