Frank Darabont directed the film, The Shawshank Redemption. I believe it was his first major motion picture. He and Steven King are friends, which is partly why an unknown director got a shot at working with such a great story. He also directed The Green Mile, another fantastic prison flick.

Don Juan The nearly three-hour-long Don Juan (1926) was the first major motion picture to employ a synchronized sound system of any type throughout. Its soundtrack contained a musical score and sound effects, but no recorded dialogue-in other words, it had been staged and shot as a silent film. The first feature-length talkie was The Jazz Singer (1927).*However, it should be noted that the first film ever to emply synchronized sound (via sonograph) was the independent film, The Photodrama of Creation.
Using a handheld camera will result in a picture that is noticeably shaky when compared to those shot with professional equipment. While this may be an undesired effect in many shots there are times (such as when shooting an action sequence) when the motion can enhance the viewing experience.
Your question is more complicated than it first appears. The first series of pictures that captures a sequence of motion is Muybridge's motion capture of a running horse. The first entertainment or novelty film clip is "The Sneeze" performed by vaudeville comedian Fred Ott, who was known for his sneezing bit. The first film projected for an audience was "Workers Leaving the Factory," shot by the Lumiere Brothers who also filmed "A Train Coming into the Station." The first American narrative film may have been "A Day in the Life of an American Fireman," a short film about a rescue from an upper floor.
