In United States history, the Gilded Age was an era extending roughly from 1870 to 1900. It was a time of rapid economic growth, especially in the Northern and Western United States.

No one knows when farming first took place. Farming became possible with the invention of the bifurcated point 13,000 B.C. Fig trees were farmed about 9,000 B.C. There could be indications of farming from an earlier era if we knew where to look and what we were looking for.
The Neolithic era, also known as the New Stone Age, took place in multiple regions around the world including the Middle East, China, Europe, India, and Africa. It is characterized by the development of agriculture, the domestication of animals, and the use of polished stone tools.

Mark Twain coined the term "Gilded Age" to criticize the period of American history characterized by superficial glitter concealing widespread social problems and corruption. He used "gilded" to suggest a thin layer of gold covering something of lesser value, reflecting his belief that the era's prosperity was only superficial.
