Bartolomeu Dias's ship was called the Caravela or Caravel. He famously sailed this vessel during his expedition around the southern tip of Africa, reaching the Cape of Good Hope in 1488. The ship was designed for exploration, being agile and suitable for navigating the open seas.
Answerthey are not sure when he died because his ship crashed in a bad storm sometime in the 1500s.
He commanded a fleet of three ships , his own "São Cristóvão," the "São Pantaleão" under his associate João Infante, and a supply ship under Dias' brother at the time that they first rounded the cape of good hope.
He was about 50 years old when his ship sank on May 29, 1500, near the Cape of Good Hope.
Bartolomeu Dias's expedition in 1488 was comprised of three ships and approximately 120 men. The exact number of crew members on each ship varied, but it is generally estimated that there were around 40 to 50 men on each vessel. This crew was responsible for navigating the treacherous waters around the southern tip of Africa, ultimately reaching the Cape of Good Hope.
I wrote about him and he died in 1500. We don't know the day yet.
Bartolomeu Dias used a caravel, a type of sailing ship, for his explorations along the coast of Africa in the late 15th century. Caravels were designed for long voyages and were known for their agility and ability to sail against the wind, making them ideal for exploration. Dias's expeditions, particularly his journey around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, were instrumental in opening sea routes to India.
Why did Bartolomeu Dias go from receiving the critical responsibility as sole leader of the first successful expedition around southernmost Africa in 1487-1488; to carrying out far more subordinate responsibilities as shipbuilding supervisor to Vasco da Gama in 1497, and as one of 13 ship captains to Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500?
