Depends on the firearm, and the markings on the firearm. By itself, 22 does not mean a lot.
22 can mean .22 Short, .22 Long or .22 Long Rifle. These may all be fired in a single shot rifle chambered in .22 LR. They will not always cycle through a repeating rifle, and may need to be fed by hand.
22 can also mean .22 Magnum- abbreviated as .22 WMR- which does NOT interchange with .22 LR.
There are other, older 22 cartridges such as .22 Winchester Auto, .22 Special, .22 extra Long, 22 WRF, .22 Remington. Those are pretty much obsolete, and do not interchange with .22 LR.
