There are 3 types of whaling that are currently happening. The first of these is commercial whaling conducted either under objection or reservation to the moratorium. The second, called aboriginal subsistence whaling is to support the needs of indigenous peoples. The third type is whaling under special permit to kill, take and treat whales for scientific research. Humpback whales are powerful swimmers, with speeds capable in excess of 30 mph in a burst. No one knows what their sustained top speed can be. Average cruising speed is between 3-7 mph, depending on whether the animal is adult, juvenile, or calf.
Humpback whales have enormously long flippers (about 1/3 of its body length) and usually have many barnacles on their skin. They have a small dorsal fin toward the tail on their back that usually has a small bump on it, giving the whale its name.
