4-Hydroxybenzoic acid, or p-hydroxybenzoic acid, HOC6H4CO2H ,

is primarily known as the basis for the preparation of its esters, known as parabens, which are used as preservatives in cosmetics, being a popular antioxidant because of its low toxicity (LD50 = 2200 mg/kg for mice (oral)).

Its isomere 2-Hydroxybenzoic acid is called: salicylic acid, a precursor to aspirin(R).
