This organism, called cyanobacteria (also called blue-green algae) excreted oxygen in the process and this changed the living planet as oxygen levels rose and killed off many other ancient organisms. Evidence of this early life comes in the form of stromatolites, which are rocky mounds which the cyanobacteria created on the ocean floor. Stromatolites are still being created by cyanobacteria, in the oceans and in hypersaline lakes. There is evidence of other organisms grazing on stromatolites as early as 1 billion years ago, which means that these more complex organisms had already evolved.
