Algae blooms often deplete the water of oxygen and replace it with carbon dioxide when then decay. Fertilizer runoff is a major contributing factor to Algae blooms. As with proper vegetation's, fertilizers provide algae with the elements (sodium, nitrogen, and phosphorus) that typically limit growth due to a lack of availability in the natural environment. The algae multiply rapidly, then in the chemical process of their decay carbon dioxide is produced.
Conifer trees and grass are the main producers in Yellowstone. Wheat grass, pond lilies, lodge pole pines, quaking aspen, green algae and gray willow are also produced.
That is the major process. It generates almost every oxygen molecule
with a chemical asphyxiant there may be plenty of oxygen in the air, but it (oxygen) is unable to attach to the blood cells; and with a simple asphyxant there is not enough oxygen in the atmospheric environment
