Almost all 4-year colleges have a Physics department. The most famous ones are probably at Princeton (where Einstein taught), Stanford and Cal Tech (California Institute of Technology).

Physics is taught in almost every U.S. college, including 2-year colleges, even if they don't have a Physics department. Many (most?) colleges require that students take at least one Physics course. This is an excellent idea, since many human activities (including all sports, and driving) are really just applied Physics.

What qualification do you need to be an astronomer?

You need a degree in physics and mathematics. If you have a degree in chemistry, that could be very useful and also contribute to the job. If you go to college or university you could study physics, astronomy or astrophysics which teaches the physical and astronomical facts about the universe. To get an advanced qualification, you could get a doctorate in physics (PhD).
