John Paul Jones was the first famous American Naval Officer. In a naval battle with the British he was asked to strike his colors, to which he replied with the famous phrase "I have not yet begun to fight". Although his accomplishments were minor, he was able to show that the British fleet was not invincible and provided America with a win when it badly needed one.
