By salvos from the German battleship Bismark. The British wanted to find and destroy Germany's largest battleship before it could get out in the Atlantic Ocean. The two ships met but the Bismark's guns were larger caliber and could fire at longer ranges the other ship escorting the hood was the prince of wales. The Hood was sunk when a salvo hit her back magazines causing it to explode and crack in half during the process. Amazingly, only 3 of its 2000 something crew survived
