It was written in the early 90s, in a period of time Jon calls his "Grey period." He was exhausted from touring nonstop, completely burned out on the music business, and depressed because all his dreams had come true and he still wasn't happy. It wasn't what he thought it would be. The band was falling apart. They weren't getting along. Jon was so down that he nearly jumped out of a moving car to kill himself. They didn't release the song until 2004, on the 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be Wrong box set. At the only concert they played to promote the box set, he said he likes the song more now, because it doesn't hurt as bad.
