He is historically the third-longest serving Canadian prime minister at 15 years and 164 days. Although defeated in the election of 1979, he won in 1980 and returned after the short tenure of Joe Clark, the 16th prime minister, whose minority government was voted out.
John Turner, Canada's 17th prime minister, served as such for only 79 days, from June 30 to September 17, 1984. The only Canadian prime minister to serve a shorter term of office was Charles Tupper (May 1 to July 8, 1896).
