Although disputed by some, Moore wrote the classic holiday poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which is perhaps better known by the poem's first line, "'Twas the night before Christmas." The poem was anonymously published December 23, 1823, which allowed for a claim of authorship to be made by the estate of Major Henry Livingston, Jr. several years later. However, no proofs have been submitted that Livingston himself ever claimed authorship. Moore made the claim of authorship nearly twenty years later, claiming that he had not originally wanted such an unscholarly poem to be associated with a very scholarly professor.

Debate exists on whether Henry Livingston Jr. or Clement Clarke Moore wrote "Twas the Night Before Christmas." While Moore is traditionally credited as the author, some believe Livingston may have penned the poem.
Clement Clarke Moore was the first to write the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which begins with the famous line "’Twas the night before Christmas." This poem is more commonly known by its first line.
Clement C Moore wrote "A Visit From St. Nicolas" in about 1823. He had written it for his children, but apparently shared it with others, for it was a friend of his that actually submitted the piece anonymously to a local paper. The poem was immediately popular, and Moore himself eventually admitted to having authored it when he included it in an anthology of poetry that he had compiled in 1844. There has been some discussion as to whether Moore actually wrote the piece originally. Arguments presented on behalf of Major Henry Livingston, Jr. by Prof. Donald Foster of Vassar College have been the subject of debate for several years.
