Clement C Moore wrote "A Visit From St. Nicolas" in about 1823. He had written it for his children, but apparently shared it with others, for it was a friend of his that actually submitted the piece anonymously to a local paper. The poem was immediately popular, and Moore himself eventually admitted to having authored it when he included it in an anthology of poetry that he had compiled in 1844.
There has been some discussion as to whether Moore actually wrote the piece originally. Arguments presented on behalf of Major Henry Livingston, Jr. by Prof. Donald Foster of Vassar College have been the subject of debate for several years.
Tje original title was A visit with St. Nicholas.
