In the early part of the US Civil War, Georgia was not heavily involved in the fighting. By 1864, this was no longer the case. The Union targeted Georgia's biggest city Atlanta, and as Union troops began their approach to Georgia, many citizens panicked. Atlanta was a major rail hub and had some manufacturing. This ended when Southern troops could no longer defend the city and Union General Sherman occupied it for about one month. He then proceeded to make his famous "march to the sea" and destroyed anything that might help Southern troops.By the war's end, Georgia had been severely damaged by the battles there. The Union policy of destroying any supplies that might be of use to the Confederacy, badly effected the lives and property of the people of Georgia.
