The CSS Arkansas was an ironclad that inflicted a good deal of damage to Union ships on the Mississippi River in 1862. On August 6, 1862, however, the loss of this ironclad ended its brief but productive career. It routed Union vessels over a 23 day period.
Confederate General Franklin Gardner graduated from West Point in 1843. Thirty-nine cadets graduated that year and Franklin was ranked 17th. Franklin saw most of his US Civil War duty in the Western Theater. He led a brigade at the Battle of Shiloh and helped defend Vicksburg.
Helped by much feuding among the Confederate leaders, Grant was able to force Pemberton's army back into the town, and then laid siege to it.
The Union victory at Vicksburg gave the Union complete control over the Mississippi River. The Mississippi was an important means of transportation. Vicksburg was one the few remaining cities under Confederate control. General Grant led the victory at Vicksburg for the North. The victory at Vicksburg also helped complete the Anaconda Plan. The Anaconda plan was the North's plan for winning the Civil War and was: 1)blockading Southern Sea Ports 2)Controlling the Mississippi 3)And capturing Richmond, VA (Richmond was the capital of the Confederate States of America)

Confederate President Jefferson Davis addressed the Confederate Congress in December of 1863. Although the successful Union siege of Vicksburg and the loss at the Battle of Gettysburg had hurt Southern chances in the war, Davis pointed out that the Rebel victory at Chickamauga proved that the Confederacy war for independence was alive and still strong.
Confederate General John Horace Forney graduated from West Point in 1852. He was ranked 22nd among his graduating class of cadets that numbered 43. Horney fought at the First Battle of Bull Run and then was wounded at the Battle of Dranesville. He was later transferred to the Western Theater of the US Civil War and helped defend Vicksburg in a losing cause. He became a prisoner that was paroled but never saw any major battle action after that.
General Ulysses Grant gained a significant advantage for the Union by winning at Vicksburg. His victory split the Confederate states at the Mississippi and denied them the use of the river for transporting supplies. His success there - followed by his success in the Chattanooga campaign also helped convince Lincoln to put him in charge of the entire Union Army.
