Does an EKG tech know much about what they're seeing?

I am an EKG technician. I can tell you, that while we do learn different patterns that may show up in the tracing, and irregularities to look out for, we are not the doctor. No matter what we see, we need to take the tracing to the doctor to examine and he will look at it and then tell the patient if he sees any problems. So, while we may know if something is wrong..it doesn't matter. We won't be the ones to tell you. We go to school to learn about the EKG machine, the way it works, the electrode placement, how to talk to the patient and run the EKG on them. It's a very good, professional and meaningful job. It's just not our place to discuss it with the patient. You can't graduate from an EKG program without learning some of the major irregularities. You learn all about the QRS complex and p waves and what they mean.

How do EKG jobs help contribute to the advancement of technology?

EKG jobs may help contribute to the advancement of this technology as the people who hold these jobs are the ones that work first hand with the equipment. These people see first hand the problems encountered when administering EKG's and can report these problems back to the equipment manufacturer. This way the manufacturer can update the equipment to address the problems the EKG tech's encounter over the course of their jobs.

Can a patient have two physical exams in the same week?

He can but its not really advisable because the results of both examinations will usually be just the same because the amount of time or interval is too short to see changes in the condition of a patient. The patient should also be given time to recuperate especially when the physical exam has invasive procedures.

What you do if the patient can't see the biggest letter?

If a patient at an ophthalmologist's office cannot see the biggest letter on the chart, the ophthalmologist will use a device to let the patient see through various lenses until the patient can see the letter. Once the degree of lenses needed had been determined, the ophthalmologist will write a prescription for a pair of eyeglasses that will allow the patient to see more clearly. Should the patient have lost all vision, however, the ophthalmologist may run tests or refer the patient to a neurological specialist.
