Canines have fur as an evolved means of self defense, and protection from the elements. Fur not only makes it harder to injure the dog, but also protects it, depending on the type of dog, from cold, rain, sleet, etc.

∙ 13y agoCanines have fur because they need it to protect it.Like for sunburn it blocks it off with its fur.It is like a sheild.It also protects rain,small pebbles,dirt, snow,and etc.Also when it is cold it keeps it warm.

Hair keeps mammals warm. Reptilian scales curled up and became mammalian hair. Hair is one of the defining features of a mammal. If it doesn't have hair it isn't a mammal. Even whales and dolphins have little hairs.

∙ 8y agoYes, in most cases hair on animals especially mammals is for insulation. Humans have lost the thick hair that most mammals have. Humans have tiny light hair follicles over most of the body. The only place that you don't find here in humans are the lips, the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands. For some reason we have lost that gene that produces the heavier hair found in most mammals.
