In the Jewish tradition, gossip and murder are unpardonable because there is no way for a gossip or a murderer to make restitution to the victim. The damage done by a gossiper cannot be undone by issuing any number of retractions, and until the gossip makes restitution, the victim has no reason to pardon the gossip. In the case of murder, no restitution is possible, and the victim, being dead, cannot pardon the murderer. Note that the Jewish tradition holds that God does not forgive sins between people until the sinner is pardoned by the victim.
