Wakkanai is in the island of Hokkaido
Wakkanai is medium sized city located on the northern tip of the Japanese home island of Hokkaido.Information: Once a relatively small fishing port, and (during WWII) a submarine base for the Japanese Navy, in the past few decades Wakkanai has been transformed into a thriving connecting port between Japan and the Russian island of Sakkhalin, located across the La Perrouse Straits.During WWII the much decorated US submarine USS Wahoo, was sunk in the straits by Japanese aircraft and shore batteries stationed nearby. In more recent history, the infamous shoot-down of Korean Air Lines Flight 007 by Russian fighter-jets (which was recorded in its entirety by a Japanese military communications monitoring unit based at Wakkanai), took place at almost the identical location.
