Extending.
Muscle movements happen from contraction and relaxation of the muscle cells. The movement is similar to a rubber band, however relaxation makes the muscles longer.
Like humans, animals also have to have the use of muscles to help provide movement and to some degree, protection. Its important for almost every living creature to have a muscle system. The muscles work in antagonistic pairs to provide different movements such as flexing and extending two different muscles play the different roles and while one is working the other is relaxing.
the hamstring is used for flexing the knee
Flexing the thigh, extending the leg, adducts leg

flexing muscles
The muscle in your arm contracts. The muscle on the other side of your arm, opposite from the side that you are flexing, stretches.
There are flexors and extensors in the forearm and they control the movements of the hand and wrist. If you hold your hand out (with the palm down), the flexors allow your hand to bend downward. The extensors allow your hand to bend upward.
When flexing your arm you would use shoulder muscles, mainly the deltoids and pectoralis major. If you flex your elbow (which most people think means flexing your arm, but is really the forearm), then you would use your biceps, brachialis. and brachioradialis muscles, which would be three muscles, depending on the orientation of the forearm.
