Roanoke Island in what is now Dare County. The island is on the east coast between the mainland and the Outer Banks.
In 1585, Sir Walter Raleigh founded the Roanoke colony. The city of Jamestown, Virginia was founded by John Smith and other settlers in 1607.
Sir Walter Raleigh did not settle at Roanoke, Virginia. He sponsored two voyages to establish a colony at Roanoke in 1585 and 1587, but both attempts ultimately failed. The fate of the settlers, known as the Lost Colony, remains a mystery.
The exact date and birthplace of Walter Raleigh are uncertain. He was born between 1552 and 1554, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne, and his childhood was spent in the village of East Budleigh in Devon.
