Emile Durkheim
If your question is what i think it is; to what extent can sociology be seen as a science. Many sociologists would argue that sociology is an extreamly relative science and should be look upon as so. If you look at the work of Emile Durkheim, who was a positivist he argues that sociology is a science, by positivist I mean - prefers to work with stats rather than words - all positivists have this belief. Interpretivists however wouldn't argue so firmly that sociology is a science as they prefer to work with 'words' rather than stats. What to look up; Durkheim's work on suicide. (very influencial in the sociology 'world' as it was the first research that labelled suicide as more than a psychological thing) - J.D Douglas; interpretivist. again, his work on suicide is the best example.
Auguste Comte is often referred to as the "father of sociology" because he coined the term "sociology" and is considered one of the founders of the discipline. His work laid the foundation for the study of society and social processes.
A career in social work is a possibility if one has a degree in sociology. One course in sociology is not enough. Also I know some people with degrees in sociology who can move into the area of education.

Durkheim did some interesting studies on suicide in relation to sociological perspective. Durkheim believed that even intensely personal decisions (suicide) were affected by society. People with strong social ties (Soldiers, City dwellers, Protestants, Singles, Nuclear Families) had lower suicide rates than people with weaker social ties (civilians, country dwellers, Catholics, married, extended families). This shows us that social ties increases societal pressure which in turn shapes decisions.

Durkheim studied suicide to understand the social factors that influence an individual's decision to take their own life. By analyzing suicide rates across different groups, he aimed to show how social integration and regulation impact an individual's sense of belonging and purpose within society. His work helped to establish sociology as a distinct field of study.
