The party system that began when the first Republican was elected president in 1860 was the emergence of a two-party system dominated by Republicans and Democrats. The Republican Party was formed in the 1850s as an anti-slavery party, and the election of Abraham Lincoln as the first Republican president marked the start of their political dominance in the North and ultimately the reconfiguration of the party system in the United States.
He was a Democrat when he was younger, but in the mid 1950's he began supporting Republican candidates, notably Dwight Eisenhower in 1956. He supported Richard Nixon for President in 1960, and officially changed parties to become a registered Republican in 1962. As he put it- he never left the Democratic Party-- they left him.
As the Great Depression began, the President was a Republican, Herbert Hoover. By 1932, conditions had worsened, and Hoover was defeated by Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

That was where he spent the most successful years of his political career. He was elected Governor of California and later President of the United States as a Republican, and was closely aligned with Republican causes throughout his time in office.
