The 2010 Mercury Mariner Hybrid gets 32 miles per gallon combined. The hybrid Ford Escape gets 32 miles per gallon combined. There are no SUV's that are not hybrid that have a combined mpg over 25, but the Subaru Forester probably comes the closest.
The Honda Pilot is an excellent SUV. It seats 8 comfortably and gets 18 mpg in the city as well as 25 highway mpg. Its has very good safety ratings as well.

I have a 2005 Ford Escape and I get 25 mpg and 27 highway mpg. I think it is great on gas, especially for an SUV. They also make hybrid Ford Escapes, which are suppose to get a lot of mpg as well.
