Twelve acres of land along Cemetery Hill was purchased by a local attorney named David Wills on behalf of the the state of Pennsylvania for the establishment of a national Cemetery. The dedication ceremony for the cemetery, Soldiers' National Cemetery, was held on November 19, 1863, where President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address.

On April 30, 1864, the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association was established as the the first battlefield preservation organization for the Civil War. The association acquired approximately 522 acres, where they placed over 300 monuments and built tour roads by the early 1890's. The association formally deeded the land to the War Department in 1895, establishing the Gettysburg National Military Park.

The park's operations were administered by three park commissioners, two Union veterans and one Confederate veteran. Their two primary objectives of the veterans were to preserve the historic fields and create a landscape memorial to their comrades. Although in the beginning, the southerners weren't very interested in commemorating their defeat, by the 1880's, both sides were ready to put the war behind them and reconcile commemoration activities.

In 1913, on the 50th anniversary of the battle, a reunion proclaimed as the "Peace Jubilee" was held. 42,000 veterans camped on the battlefield and on July 3, around 150 survivors of General George Pickett's Division unfurled their battle flags and march across the fields to The Angle at Cemetery Ridge. In the spirit of reconciliation, they were greeted by handshakes from veterans of Pennsylvanian's Philadelphia Brigade.

In July of 1938, the 75th anniversary of the battle, more than 1800 veterans once again reunited at the battlefield for week-long festivities in commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg. The highlight of the event was the dedication of the Eternal Peach Light Memorial. The monument is inscribed with the words "Peace Eternal In A Nation United" at the base of the monument below and etching of two women symbolizing unity between the north and the south. At the close of a speech made by President Franklin Roosevelt, the monument was unveiled and the flame was ignited, and still burns today.

In 1961 - 1965, national unity was once again emphasized with a centennial celebrated themed "A Nation United." A "Strength Through Unity" parade a "Reunion at the High Water Mark" highlighted the 100th anniversary of the battle.

Activities around the country in commemoration of the Battle of Gettysburg, especially at Gettysburg, have made the battlefield into a shrine of American Patriotism; a memorial to American history and culture.
