You have to get your Cosmetology license in cosmetology school. Then you must work in a salon for at least 1 year. After that, you go back to cosmetology school, enroll in the cosmetology instructor course, and become a 'Student' instructor. The course depending on the state you live in is usually between 500 and 650 hours. Full time takes between 5 and 6 months. You will learn how to teach cosmetology through hands on experience, demos, lesson planning, teaching theory etc. After you graduate you must pass the state board test to receive your Instructor's License.
