All coins are collectable, it would depend on the reason why you want to collect.

If you just want to collect, grab anything that takes your fancy.

If you want to collect as an investment, go for "Uncirculated" or "Proof" coins, which start out expensive and usually increase in value over time.

Two Pound coins would be good to start with, since they were first issued in 1986 as a commemorative coin, and became a regular issue from 1997. They are an attractive, varied and unusual coin.

British decimal Two Pound coins have not been around long to become rare or valuable.

Most British Two Pound coins have the date on them somewhere. It may be artfully incorporated into the design, or on the edge in a few cases.

Many Two Pound coins commemorate the anniversary of something, so there may be two dates, the earlier date being the year that the subject of the commemoration occurred, the later date being the year of the commemoration.

The 2009 "250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns" Two Pound coin does not have the year of minting/issue on it. The reverse inscription shows "1759 Robert Burns 1796 (years of birth and death), but does not state that it is the 250th anniversary of anything. If you were familiar with Robert Burns, you might make the assumption that it is a 250th anniversary commemoration of his birth and that therefore the coin is a 2009 coin, but that would be drawing a very long bow.

The 2010 "100th anniversary of the death of Florence Nightingale and the 150th anniversary of publication of Notes on Nursing" Two Pound coin does not have the year of minting/issue on it. The reverse inscription shows "1820 - Florence Nightingale - 1910 (years of birth and death), but does not state that it is the 100th or 150th anniversary of anything. Again, if you were familiar with Florence Nightingale and the history of nursing, you might make the assumption that it is a 100th anniversary commemoration of her death and that therefore the coin is a 2010 coin. Another very long bow draw.

In response to the above answer: I got a 2010 Florence Nightingale £2 coin in my change a few days ago. There is no requirement for familiarity as it clearly shows '2010' in the usual place under the queen. Also, as for the long bow, also unnecessary as the reason for issue is engraved on the coin in the form of dates, 1820-1910, which given the aforementioned date of issue, is a more than obvious 100 year anniversary coin. Also the "100 years of nursing" engraved around the edge is a dead give away.

Yes, there were approximately 5,004,500 Two Pound coins minted for 2004 featuring the "200th Anniversary of the first steam locomotive by Richard Trevithick".

There were a further 11,981,500 Two Pound coins with the more traditional 4 concentric rings design with "STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS" around the edge.

Perhaps - to a collector. They're certainly not legal tender - so you can't spend them in shops etc. They would be classed as forgeries.
