After the US Civil War, Union General Oliver O. Howard was appointed by US President Andrew John to head the newly created Freedmen's Bureau. Later on General Howard was instrumental in establishing a college for Black people in Washington DC. It was named Howard University in Howard's honor. ∙ 6y agoWhen Union General James B. McPherson was killed during the Battle of Atlanta, General Sherman replaced him with General O.O. Howard. He was a veteran of Gettysburg. Howard University is named after General Howard. After the war, Howard headed the Freedman's Bureau.
