without it, you can't navigate in wii menu, so it is impossible you can play some games (compatible wii games and gamecube games) with gamecube controller, but you can't start any game without it if your wii remote doesn't work, try to change the batteries or buy a new one and try to use the SYNC buttons (push on the wii and on the backside of the wii remote one time to sync them, on the wii it is next to the sd card, on the wii remote it is next to the batteries)
