Vermonts nickname of the Green Mountain State was given by the French explorer Samuel De Champlain when on one fine spring day he first laid eyes on the expansive lush, green, verdant mountains. Champlain renamed the area Montagnes Vertes (French for Green Mountain.) Later in vermonts history as English speaking settlers began arriving its name was changed again to Vermont (Ver for green mont for mountain)or Green Mountain state.
