Judy Garland (June 10, 1922 - June 22, 1969) was sixteen (16) years old when she played Dorothy Gale in "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, the movie version of the original 1900 book "The Wizard of Oz" by Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) was filmed from fall 1938 through early spring 1939. The filming therefore took place after Garland's sixteenth (16th) birthday in 1938 and before her seventeenth (17th) birthday in 1939. In terms of height, the petite Garland was a realistic choice for interpreting a young girl on screen. In terms of the curves of a dancer and the shape of a teenager, the young actress had to wear an uncomfortable body flattener beneath her blue-and-white dress.
The Film was released in l939 as was also, Gone with the Wind, both having imagery of weather- Cyclone, rainbow- and the civil war drama.
