It depends upon how kind or unkind their owners were; however, even the cruellest and most tyrannical slave-owners did not want to have undernourished slaves as it was against their interests, and meant that a sick slave could not work. Generally speaking they would have lived on rough bread, oatcakes and water, but kinder owners would have also allowed them a ration of some milk and perhaps some sweet biscuits or cakes made with honey.
