Edward Cullen has the ability to read people's and vampire's thoughts from a distance as they think them. Aro, one of the 3 leaders of the Volturi coven, has a similar power but he can only read somebodies mind when he touches them but than he knows every thought they ever had during their life. That would mean that when he touches Edward he knows everything Edward ever heard in other peoples heads. Reading minds also allows him to see Alice's visions when she is around him.
It's not mentioned how far can Edward hear but it is about few miles since he can track people by reading their mind and not their scent.
He can also read the minds of the wolves, but he cannot hear Bella's thoughts since she is a 'shield' and blocks and has blocked even when she was human all mental powers.
