There are different types of soft hammer, but all used where you want a large impact on a large surface, not on a nail. I have two, one has a rolled leather head and the other has polyurethane heads, both heads about 2" round and on a very heavy centre.

Babbitt is an alloy which there are many different compositions. That said, a babbitt hammer is usually made of a composition of tin, copper, and or lead, and is used as a "soft blow" hammer. Because the alloy is soft but heavy, it transfers a good amount of force without scratching/marring the workpiece surface.

It was near the middle of the hardness matrix.
Use a large soft blow rubber hammer. If you are replacing them use a good sized regular hammer ,should come right off
Because lead is a very dense and quite soft metal.

Calcium deforms when hit by a hammer because it is a relatively soft metal compared to others. When force is applied, the atomic structure of calcium allows it to be easily bent or reshaped under pressure. This deformation can occur because calcium lacks the strength and rigidity of harder materials.
Use a 4-pound hammer and hit it with only a soft blow, repeatedly for about 15 mins.
